Bipolar Disorder

Also known as a bipolar affective disorder, bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. It can cause extreme highs and lows in mood, energy, and activity levels. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 2.8% of U.S. adults or approximately 5 million people are living with bipolar disorder.

This condition can make it difficult for someone to lead a high quality of life and have a negative effect on relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and many others. The good news is that with the right treatment plan, an individual with bipolar disorder may lead a fulfilling, productive life.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

The symptoms of bipolar disorder vary from individual to individual. Typically, however, those with this condition experience the following:

  • Episodes of mania or an elevated mood
  • Episodes of depression or a low mood

Signs of mania include excessive energy, extreme high feelings, decreased need for sleep, unusual sex drive or drug abuse, aggressive behavior, and incredibly poor judgment. Depression may be present if an individual is persistently sad or anxious, feels hopeless or worthless, or has difficulty concentrating or thoughts of suicide.
